We've noticed an average of around 3% as well have 800x600 but we still try and fit the most important content of the site in this area.<br/><br/>For a fluid layout, I would be tempted to optimise the design for 1280x800 since 1024x768 is now on the decline and greater resolutions on the rise, providing it degrades nicely to 1024x768 While we usually design to fixed width layouts rather than fluid ones (less planning and coding involved), we design to 1024×768 (well ~ 999×600 taking into account toolbars etc).
