Facebook pages for businessesWith Social Media growing in importance, small businesses are catching onto the fact that they need to have a presence on Facebook. But in setting this up, these companies often make a very common mistake: mixing up personal Profiles and company Pages.

This might seem a little picky, but it is strictly against Facebook rules to have multiple accounts. If you’re caught, you risk having your entire account deleted by Facebook, meaning that you’ll have to set up all over again.

When you join Facebook as an individual, you create a Profile. This allows you to connect with your friends. You can send Friend requests to people you know and they can “Friend” you. But for businesses, Facebook has created another option. If you are a company setting up on Facebook, you do not create a Profile, instead you create a Page. Instead of Friends, you have Fans.

By way of an example, Susan works with a website called Inafishbowl, which follows the fortunes of three start-up companies. All three have a presence on Facebook, but two have made the above mistake in setting this up.

Mama Jewels correctly has a Facebook Page set up, on which it has 185 fans. This Page is visible to anyone on the web, is found by Google, and has pages in the URL:

However, there is also a personal Profile for the company, meaning that there is more than one account in its name and it is breaching Facebook rules. This Profile can only be viewed by becoming a Friend of the “person” Mama Jewels.

To further complicate matters, Mama Jewels also has a special interest Facebook Group, which has a further 91 members.

Confused yet?

As for Prescient Power, their Facebook presence is less clear. There is a Profile by that name ( but you cannot view this without, once again, becoming a Friend of the “person” Prescient Power, meaning that, unless you do this (inappropriately), you have no way of knowing whether this is the company you want.

So, if what you want is a company Page, you can create a Business Account. More information can be found at

If you already have a personal Facebook Profile, you can still create a business page whilst keeping your personal Profile private. It is important to note that these are separate, i.e. your company’s Fans do not automatically become your personal Friends.

  1. Good post Helen – I smiled when I started reading as we did just that – ended up setting up all sorts of things and nothing like ‘Mama Jewels’. It is a bit confusing at first, but after a few hours of adding and deleting I thing we got there 🙂

    Maybe you could shed some light on sharing or linking other accounts to your business page, for example how do you link a blog to your facebook business page, when you come to do this you are asked to sign into facebook, which automatically takes you to your profile page until you click through as administrator on a business page. This is giving me real headaches.
