Hallam has once again partnered with the University of Nottingham to support students who are passionate about digital marketing. The agency will help the students get inspired and gain experience through a series of activities.
For the second year in a row, Hallam Internet is delivering the Digital Marketing Academy in collaboration with the University of Nottingham and other local agencies. The initiative aims to give more insights into digital marketing to students who are interested in pursuing a career in the field or are just curious about online marketing.
What is the Digital Marketing Academy?
The programme consists of various workshops and individual activities that will offer students an in-depth experience of what it is like to have a digital marketing job. The different stages of the programme have been designed in such a way as to develop different sets of transferrable and digital skills.
The first stage is the Digital Marketing Showcase, which took place on Tuesday. Hallam specialists Sophie Logan and Jonathan Catton joined other local experts and talked to students about what they do on a daily basis at Hallam. In an informal presentation, they touched on specific examples of how they manage client campaigns and what their PPC roles imply.
The scheme has been designed to be more than a series of talks, with the students having the opportunity to gain hands-on experience the further down the line they go. After attending the showcase, the participants have 3 months to become Google-accredited. This implies passing two free online Google courses such as Google Digital Garage and Google Analytics Fundamentals.
Students who have successfully completed the first two parts of the programme will be eligible to participate in an Insight Day between February and March 2019. The students will have the opportunity to spend an entire day in one of the participating digital agencies. In 2017 five students came into the Hallam office in Nottingham city centre and took part in a range of activities. These ranged from shadowing and “a day in the life of” style talks to a group task and a Q&A session. In addition, they had lunch with the team and met our office dog, Rosie.
The last phase of the programme is designed for those who decide they would like to take their experience to the next level and work for an agency. They will have the opportunity to join one of the agencies involved and work under the guidance of a professional on client projects. To reach this stage, students will have had to have participated in the Insight Day. This will give students hands-on experience and a great addition to their CVs.
Hallam creates opportunities for students
Hallam has been working with the universities in Nottingham for several years creating opportunities for graduates and students. In addition to taking part in short-term initiatives such as the Digital Academy, the agency has created real chances for young people to start a career in digital marketing.
Hallam offers summer internships and graduate jobs to those who show true passion for the field. We find that very often students refrain from applying to digital opportunities because they think they need a degree in the domain or previous experience. At Hallam we do things differently, and we don’t ask for a marketing degree or experience, as long as applicants show a can-do attitude and a desire to work for an agency.
We also have a graduate scheme in place which gives the successful applicants the option to specialise in a certain digital discipline or rotate between different teams before deciding what path they would like to follow. The scheme will open again in January 2019 and you can sign up to receive a notification when it goes live.
