Nottingham’s digital marketing agency Hallam has grown rapidly over the past 12 months. With a thriving client list and an ever increasing demand for their services, the company has recently recruited four new digital marketing executives, and more than doubled the size of the business in the last year.

This year, the company celebrates 15 years in business. Here, Commercial Director Mike Hallam explains how the company has grown from a single person consultancy to a thriving local, national and international agency.

Staying true to your values

Managing a high growth business means having a clear strategic vision and a business plan that supports the planned growth.  Fundamentally, our business model has remained unchanged since our inception in 1999.  Hallam delivers ethical digital marketing from an agency you can trust.

This means we only deal in ethical, what our industry calls ‘white hat’, techniques which deliver positive results for our clients.

I believe this is what sets our company apart from our competitors. There will always be digital marketing companies offering ‘number 1 rankings on Google’ or a ‘100% increase in traffic’ – big promises which usually mask unethical practices. With us, our clients know they’re getting a high quality service from a team of experts.

Building the client base

Our client base ranges from smaller, local companies looking to grow to large blue chip businesses seeking to build on their successes and take advantage of new opportunities. Our client base includes Experian, the Ford dealer network, Rutland Cycling and Wastecycle.

Public speaking, seminars and networking events play an important part in our marketing mix. Demonstrating our expertise and building trust is the essential first step to working with new clients.  Our team is regularly invited to deliver training sessions or speeches at conferences and trade events. Susan Hallam, Managing Director of the business, is most prominent in this and last year received a Vistage Speaker of the Year award for her work.

Obviously, our digital marketing plays an important role too.  We receive significant traffic to our website, in particular our blog, where we regularly share our advice and updates from the digital marketing industry. Our social media channels are also important to us and we are continually measuring, analysing and refining what we do to ensure our efforts are delivering us the results we need.

The importance of relationships

It’s important to us that we have a strong working relationship with our clients. Each of our clients is assigned their own dedicated consultant, which means they have one point of contact within the business. This allows us to really understand the needs of our clients and ensures we deliver them the results they need.

Our clients can contact us whenever they need and we stay in touch regularly, providing monthly reports to keep them up to date on what we’re doing. We always discuss our plans with our clients too.

I believe the relationships any business has with its clients are of huge importance. That’s why part of my role within the company is to monitor those relationships and develop them with existing and new clients.

Employing the perfect team

Our growth is dependent on our time. Because what we sell is our time, we need to ensure we have the staff in place to meet new demands.

We take great pride in the team we have here at Hallam. We only employ the very best digital marketers and the calibre of our team is a huge selling point for us.

This means that the recruitment process is a long one. We need to be sure that the people we recruit can deliver what we and our clients need, so we always interview three times – once with Susan, once with me and once with a senior member of our team. This allows us to ascertain whether or not the candidate is a good fit for our team.

We were delighted to announce the recruitment of four new team members this month, and look forward to further team growth over the coming months as well as a move to a larger office to accommodate everyone.
