At Hallam, we’re lucky to work with amazing people who are committed to not only delivering excellence to our clients but also to helping shape our agency into being the best possible version it can be.

So, we were absolutely delighted to be selected as one of Campaign’s Best Places to Work 2021. Created by Campaign and Best Companies Group, the list of the Best Places to Work was designed to identify, recognise and honour the best places of employment in marketing, advertising and media professions.

Our CEO, Julio Taylor, said: “If there’s one value and core belief I’ve held since the day I started in agencies, it’s that work should exist to make our lives better, not the other way around. A company can only be as good as its employees want it to be and for people to be fully productive and truly happy, work needs to exist as a component of a happy life. Passion is the combination of skill and love — if you remove either of those ingredients, you don’t get the best version of the best people.
“At Hallam, we’re immensely proud of our colleagues; this is yet another best place to work list that we’re delighted to be included in and a reflection of the passion our colleagues bring not only to their work but to working with each other, too.”

The process

Running a two-part survey process, the first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company’s workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics with the second part consisting of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. The combined scores determined the top organisations and the final ranking.

Jennifer Small, consulting editor at Campaign, said: “Once upon a time, it was enough that bosses filled the fridge with free beer on a Friday. Now, the best people are likely to be considering how work and home life fit together, the purpose of the agency, the level of autonomy they’ll be afforded, how connected they’ll be with their teams, as well as their mental and physical wellbeing. The 90 agencies and marketing departments that have made the Campaign “Best places to work” grade are united in their recognition of this and, as such, deserve congratulations for making it through a tough year and coming out the other side as desirable employers.”

Our approach

So, what is it that helped us to be listed as one of Campaign’s Best Places to Work? Jake Third, our MD, explained: “The pandemic led to a profound shift in the relationship between employee and employer. We felt a much greater responsibility to look after the mental health of our employees – which is why we have invested in mental health first aiders and paying for free of charge access to therapy for our team. We’ve implemented new policies to improve the working lives of our colleagues, such as the Future of Work and implementing an incredibly important miscarriage policy. We also believe in having fun – which is why we created Hallam’s Ministry of Fun: a specialist team who organise events, arrange games, and generally help us to have a laugh. But, above all, we recognise that there is still work to be done and I’m incredibly proud of our team for all their hard work in helping to shape us into the agency we are today.”
